Monsieur McCain was born in Kannapolis, NC and reared in Washington, D.C.  He graduated from Washington’s Eastern High School.  After high school, Monsieur Franklin McCain, like the all the members of Greensboro Four, went to pursue his degree at North Carolina A&T University.

While he studied at N.C. A&T University he roomed with Monsieur David Richmond.  Their room was located in Scott Hall around the corner from the other members of the Greensboro Four, Monsieur Ezell Blair Jr. & Monsieur Joseph Mc Neil.  Four years after the sit-ins Monsieur McCain graduated from N.C. A&T with a degree in chemistry & biology.  During that same year he married a southern belle, Bettye Davis, a Bennett College alumna.

In 1965, a year after graduation and marriage he joined Hoechst-Celanese Corp. in Charlotte, NC in 1965 as a chemist.   He is now retired, while enjoying life he still carries the torch of the Greensboro Four through his civil activities.

Some of his civic activities in Charlotte include serving as co-chairman of Fighting Back, an anti-drug program; a member of a county budget committee and a city government efficiency committee; former issues committee chairman for the Black Political Caucus; chairman of the state committee of the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund; and a member of a committee on resources for magnet schools.

In 1993, he received the Nancy Susan Reynolds Award for leadership and was appointed to N.C. A&T’s board of trustees in 2005. He is now chairman of the board of trustees.

Monsieur McCain and wife reside in Charlotte, North Carolina and have three sons they are proud to call their own, Franklin Jr., Wendell and Bertrand.
